The 6 Best Beaches Near Porto (That Aren’t Packed with People)
Portugal has, arguably, some of the most stunning beaches in the world — and yes, I’m totally biased. But when you live in Porto and the Atlantic Ocean is quite literally your backyard, how can you not be?
The only downside to all this coastal beauty? As soon as summer hits, everyone flocks to the beach. Places like Praia do Matosinhos and Foz do Douro are easy go-to’s for locals and visitors alike. They’re close, convenient, and yes — often crowded.
But if you’re willing to venture just a little farther, you’ll find an entirely different experience: beaches close to nature reserves, stretches of wild coastline, and even remote white sand beaches that make you feel like you’re on a tropical holiday.
So if you’re craving space, scenery, and that elusive peaceful beach day, here are 6 of the best beaches near Porto that are actually worth the trip.

Póvoa de Varzim
Just a 45-minute metro ride from Porto, Póvoa de Varzim is one of the most accessible beach towns along the northern coast — but don’t mistake easy access for boring!
This stretch of coastline has wide golden sands, a long promenade perfect for bike rides or sunset walks, and a distinctly local feel. You’ll find fishermen hauling in their catch early in the morning, small cafés with old school espresso machines, and enough space on the sand even in high season.
Bonus: the beach is right by the town centre, so you can grab lunch or do a little people watching without wandering far.
Praia de Espinho
Surfboards, market stalls, and wide open sands — welcome to Espinho. Located about 30 minutes south of Porto by tram, this beach town has a laid-back vibe that draws locals and surfers without ever feeling too polished.
The beach itself is massive — ideal if you’re after a spot where you won’t be lying towel-to-towel with strangers. There’s also a beachfront boardwalk, surf schools, and some excellent seafood restaurants nearby.
If you happen to visit on a Monday, don’t miss the Espinho outdoor market — one of the biggest weekly markets in Portugal.

Praia de Leça da Palmeira
This one’s for those who like their beach days with a side of modern architecture and cool cafés. Leça da Palmeira is just north of Matosinhos, and while it’s growing in popularity, it still flies under the radar compared to the tourist-heavy Foz.
The beach is long, windy but beautiful, and perfect for long afternoon sunbathing sessions. But the real star here? The Piscina das Marés — iconic tidal pools designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. They’re saltwater, sculptural, and perfect for a chill swim even when the Atlantic is wild.
There are a few great places to grab a drink nearby too, especially around the marina.
Praia de Moledo
If you’re in the mood for a mini road trip, Moledo is your wild summer dream come true. Tucked near the Spanish border, this beach feels more like a windswept nature retreat than a typical seaside day out.
You’ll find mountain views, Atlantic breeze, and a sandy stretch that’s rarely busy thanks to its distance from Porto. The waters here can be rough — ideal for kite surfers and strong swimmers — and the surrounding area is backed by pine forests and dunes.
It’s a favourite with in-the-know Portuguese families and nature lovers. Pack snacks, a book, and get ready to unplug.
Praia do Cabedelo do Douro
If you want to stay close to Porto but still escape the crowds, Cabedelo do Douro is your hidden gem. Located on the south bank of the Douro River where it meets the Atlantic, this beach is wild, often empty, and feels surprisingly remote.
The sand is soft and pale, the waves are gentler thanks to the breakwater, and you’re likely to share the beach with more birds than people. There’s also a walking trail through the dunes and forested areas nearby, which makes it feel even more removed from city life.
It’s not commercial at all — bring your own snacks, umbrella, and beach towel. And don’t expect beach bars — this one’s all about quiet nature vibes.
Praia de São Jacinto
Located between the Atlantic and the Aveiro Lagoon, São Jacinto is part of a protected natural reserve and one of the most peaceful beach escapes in northern Portugal.
That said, this one is more of a full day trip — getting there involves a train ride to Aveiro, a ferry across the lagoon, and a short walk or cycle through the dunes. It’s not quick or spontaneous like hopping over to Matosinhos — but if you’re craving a beach day surrounded by raw nature, it’s 100% worth it.
Once you arrive, you’re rewarded with vast white sands, barely a building in sight, and clear blue water. There are no beach bars or crowds here — just waves, birdsong, and the kind of stillness you rarely find in summer.
And there you have it! These beaches near Porto offer unspoiled beauty, rolling waves, and a true taste of life by the sea. Whether you’re in the mood for a surfing adventure, a quiet sunset spot, or a vibrant coastal town, there’s a perfect beach waiting for you. Pack your toalha, head out, and you might just find your own slice of paradise.
Até logo e aproveitem as ondas!
