Fado is said to have originated as a song sung by Portuguese sailors and explorers who went out to sea in the late 1800s, leaving their families behind. The music that grew from those moments of separation became what we now call Fado.
One of the most famous stories from this era is the love affair between the nobleman Count of Vimioso and Maria Severa Onofriana, a renowned Fado singer. By the 1930s, Fado houses became concentrated in Lisbon’s historic quarters, particularly in Bairro Alto, solidifying its place in Portuguese culture.
The genre’s reputation soared, and in the 1950s, Amália Rodrigues became the undisputed queen of Fado, taking it beyond Portugal’s borders and securing its legacy.

When I went to Fado Maior do Porto, I didn’t expect it to hit me quite the way it did. The moment the lights dimmed and the first chords filled the room, everything else just melted away. The performance moved through different styles of fado, starting with the more haunting tones of Coimbra before shifting into the soulful, expressive sound of Lisbon, and each carried its own kind of weight. The singers had this incredible ability to hold the room in absolute stillness; even the air seemed to listen. Sitting there with a glass of Port, I remember thinking how rare it is to feel so completely present in a moment.

Cais do Fado
For a unique Fado experience I highly recommend grabbing a ticket for Cais do Fado. This is a passion project founded by two musicians who wanted to share the music with people in the most authentic way possible. They host their performances right by the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, so you get incredible views of Porto and the Dom Luís I Bridge while you listen. You even get a glass of port wine to really set the mood! They host their Fado concerts everyday at 5:30pm.
